Wiretide 1.0 is almost here

Your app talks HTTP and MQTT.
Now you can watch both.

Wiretide is a native Mac debugging proxy that shows your app's HTTPS, WebSocket and MQTT traffic in one timeline. Find the bug faster, then pause, change and replay traffic to prove the fix.

Free to capture and inspect · macOS 14 Sonoma or later · Apple silicon and Intel

Wiretide's timeline: HTTPS requests, MQTT CONNECT, SUBSCRIBE and PUBLISH packets and WebSocket text frames in one list, with a JSON response and its timing open in the inspector.
  • GET 200HTTP & HTTPS
  • TEXTWebSocket
  • PUBLISHMQTT 3.1.1 & 5
  • TLSover TCP, TLS or WebSocket

Free features

Everything you expect from a debugging proxy, plus the traffic others miss.

Decrypt HTTPS

See inside encrypted requests from Mac apps, the iOS Simulator and real devices. Wiretide sets up the certificate for you.

Decode MQTT

Read every MQTT message in plain language, from the first connect to the last disconnect, on MQTT 3.1.1 and 5.

Follow WebSockets

Watch every WebSocket message in both directions, decoded and searchable. MQTT over WebSocket shows up as MQTT.

Search and filter

Find any request or message in seconds by URL, header, body, topic or payload. One-click filters narrow it down to errors or JSON.

Know why it failed

When an app refuses to be inspected, Wiretide tells you why instead of failing quietly, and lets you skip that host in one click.

Timing and export

See where the time goes on every request, from lookup to download. Export a capture to share it with your team.

One-click setup

Press record and your Mac apps and the iOS Simulator flow through Wiretide. No settings to change, and everything goes back when you stop.

Readable bodies

Compressed responses are decoded for you, so every body is readable and searchable. JSON opens as a tree you can expand.

Built for MQTT

See your broker conversation, not a wall of bytes.

Most debugging proxies stop at HTTP. Wiretide sits between your app and your MQTT broker and shows every message as it happens, so you know exactly what your app and devices are saying.

  • Works with the broker you have. Plain, encrypted or over WebSocket, with nothing to change on the broker.
  • A live topic tree. Browse every MQTT topic as a tree, with the last payload, message rate and count for each.
  • Charts from your messages. Plot any number in your payloads and watch it change over time.
  • Every connection in context. See which client sent each message and how it connected.
The MQTT topic tree with last payloads and rate sparklines, and a chart of a payload value in the inspector.
The MQTT packet list with a packet open in the inspector.

Saved Sessions

Every capture is saved. Go back to any of them.

Every recording is saved for you. Reopen last week's bug in seconds while live capture keeps running, and share it when you need a second pair of eyes.

  • Find it by day. Every session is listed by date, with a count of what it captured.
  • Newest in the sidebar. The three most recent sessions are one click away, with a link to the rest.
  • Back to live in one click. A banner over the timeline takes you straight back to live capture.
  • Rename, export or delete. Export any session to share it with a teammate.
  • Free keeps one saved session. Wiretide asks before replacing it, so you can export it first. Pro keeps every session.

Pro tools

Don't just watch the traffic. Change it.

Reproduce the bugs your backend won't give you on demand: a slow response, a missing field, a bad value from a device. Pro works on HTTP and MQTT alike.

Breakpoints

Pause a request before it leaves, or a response before your app sees it.

Change anything in place, then send your version on or cancel it. Test your error handling without touching the server.

  • Pause only the requests you care about
  • Edit JSON with formatting and validation
  • Edited traffic is marked, so you never lose track
A paused response: status 200, its headers and a JSON body ready to edit, with Abort, Reset, Continue and Return edited buttons.
Map & Rewrite

Mock an API, switch servers or fix a response without changing code.

Rules apply live as traffic flows, with no restart and no new build.

  • Map Local answers a request with your own response
  • Map Remote sends traffic to staging or your own machine
  • Rewrite headers, status codes and JSON values on the way through
  • MQTT rules change topics and payloads, even over encrypted or WebSocket connections
The Map & Rewrite window with a rule that sets a header, sets a JSON value and replaces Cache-Control.
An MQTT rule that changes the payload and topic of matching messages.
MQTT publish & replay

Send any message to your broker, or replay one you captured.

Send a test message, or replay a real one you captured, once or many times over, and see how your app copes.

  • Replay a captured message in one click
  • JSON, text or binary payloads
  • Repeat sends to put your app under load
The Replay message sheet with a topic, QoS 1, retain on, MQTT 5 properties, a JSON payload and Send 5 times every 500 ms.
Scripting

When a rule isn't enough, write a little JavaScript.

Write a few lines of JavaScript to change requests, responses and MQTT messages as they pass, or answer a request yourself without reaching the server.

  • Editor with highlighting, live error checks and ready-made templates
  • Try a script on traffic you already captured before turning it on
  • Works on HTTP and MQTT

FAQ

Questions

Does my traffic leave my Mac?

No. Everything you capture stays on your Mac, and scripts run there too. Wiretide only goes online to check your Pro license and look for updates.

What's free and what needs Pro?

Capturing and inspecting everything is free: HTTP, HTTPS, WebSocket and MQTT, search, timing and export. Free keeps one saved session next to the one recording now; when you start another, Wiretide asks before replacing the old one, and you can always export it first. Pro adds the tools that change traffic (breakpoints, map and rewrite, MQTT publish and replay, scripting) and keeps unlimited saved sessions.

Why isn't it on the Mac App Store?

A debugging proxy needs to run a local proxy, install a root certificate and talk to the iOS Simulator, which the App Store sandbox doesn't allow. You download Wiretide from this site, and it updates itself.

How do I capture MQTT?

Add your broker in Settings and point your app at the address Wiretide gives you. Wiretide passes everything through to your broker and shows it as it goes. MQTT over WebSocket is picked up automatically.

Does it work with the iOS Simulator and real devices?

Yes. The Simulator uses your Mac's proxy settings, and Settings can install the root certificate into a booted Simulator for you. For a physical device, set the Wi-Fi proxy to your Mac and trust the certificate on the device.

What happens after my 12 months of updates?

Pro keeps working forever on every version released within 12 months of your purchase. Renew if you want the newer ones. A license also keeps working offline for 30 days between checks.
